Projects and publications of the research program Global History 2000 - 2005 (completed)

Publication series: “Ursachen des europäischen Sonderwegs” (Causes of the European Divergence), 2000-2006
How can the origin of “industrialization” or “modernization” be explained? From the perspective of global history the question is which circumstances caused modern Europe to diverge from the common pattern of the agrarian societies and to take a direction which sooner or later compelled the other advanced civilizations (the Islamic world, India, China, Japan) to follow suit.

European Society for Environmental History
In 1999 the European Society for Environmental History (ESEH) was founded with the support of the Breuninger Foundation. As a result the field of environmental history was established on an institutional basis, coordination of activities and programmes was improved and the exchange of views and opinions furthered.
